Inita Network Overview

Initia wants to make multichain networks more interoperable and make developing and deploying app chains or app-specific blockchains easier.

This Initia blockchain presentation provides an in-depth look at the network’s unique architecture, the economics of its native token, the Initia staking model, and the solutions it offers to the blockchain space.

What is Initia Network ?

Initia is a blockchain developed using the Cosmos SDK that is designed to offer scalability and interoperability solutions. Its unique architecture consists of a Layer 1 blockchain, which serves as the base chain, and an integration of Layer 2 of scalability tools, which form a tightly knit, interwoven modular rollups network.

The Initia blockchain’s design gives developers the tools and freedom to build scalable and sovereign solutions conveniently, eliminating the user-experience challenges that characterize the fragmented multichain environment.

Besides, the setup includes communication layers that allow developers to launch Initia L2s or application-specific systems without running validator sets or contending with complicated chain-level infrastructure.

The blockchain’s base chain, the orchestration layer, leverages a VM-agnostic framework called OPinit Stack to coordinate interoperability, routing, security, and liquidity across interwoven rollups.

It uses Celestia’s Data Availability (DA) layer to enable secure scaling of the rollups.

The OPinit Stack has rollbacks and fraud proofs, allowing developers to choose suitable VMs for their projects. A blockchain rollback refers to a technology stack that allows a blockchain settlement layer to reverse a series of confirmed transactions.

The available VM options on the technology stack are MoveVM, a resource model, WasmVM, and EVM. WasmVM is ideal for projects that require enhanced security, while EVM has the robust stature of Solidity.

A critical component of Initia Network, Minitia or mini Initia, earlier referred to as Initia L2s, are the Layer 2 application chains. It comprises fully functional CosmosSDK blockchains that leverage optimistic rollups to settle transactions.

They have rapid block times (500ms) and throughput (10,000 TPS), making them high-performance platforms that can serve various purposes. Besides, they provide considerably convenient paths to building interoperable, fast, flexible, and product-ready app-chains.

Understanding the fragmentation problem

Fragmentation is a challenge in the blockchain landscape. It causes friction that demands users to spend different gas fees, acquire different wallets, and sign up to different explorers to complete different tasks or carry out different transactions on the same app.

Essentially, different features on the same app may require different gas fees. It is akin to using different fiat currencies to pay for services on the same Web2 app. The situation is even more complex if you have to transfer data or value between blockchains.

Besides, developing and deploying app chains takes a lot of work. Developers must perfect their products and master the tech stacks that bring them to fruition. Jumping several hoops when building across chains is not uncommon.

Whereas solutions such as rollups exist to eliminate these challenges, many have worsened the situation by exacerbating fragmentation and are rigid from most developer scenarios.

Initia Blockchain solution for developers

Initia Blockchain aims to ease the process of assembling a L2 network while making the most of the instant support of the diverse Cosmos and Ethereum features it has collected.

It allows product developers to focus on the product, eliminating the need to shift attention between the product and its support system.

Simply put, any team running an app chain already has a lot to contend with: conceptualizing the product, defining the parameters of its market segment, reaching the right audience, integrating feedback into future developments, and so forth.

Such teams do not have to worry about the application’s support system. Instead, the framework technology used to bring the product to life should fetch these features.

This last statement defines Initia's whole premise: it makes it easy to create app chains, helping developers free up time and focus more on product development.

Who is the team behind Initia?

Initia Network was created by Ezaan “Zon” Mangalji and Stan Liu. The duo worked together at Terraform Labs, later leaving to partner in a Cosmos-based DeFi blockchain, a project that they dumped when Luna collapsed. They have been joined at Initia by a team of developers who developed the Cosmos Hub.

Initia got a pre-seed investment from Binance Labs, the incubation and venture capital arm of Binance Exchange. Months later, it raised $7.5 million in a seed round led by Hack VC and Delphi Ventures with participation from A. Capital Ventures, Figment Capital, Big Brain Holdings, Nascent, co-founder of Split Capital Zaheer Ebtikar, Nick White of Celestia, and Berachain co-founder Smokey the Bera.

How does Initia Blockchain work?

At the heart of Initia’s engine is the seamless integration of Layer 1 and Layer 2 frameworks to create a unified platform called Omnitia.

Initia Blockchain Omnitia architecture

The core of this platform consists of four critical pieces:

  • Initia / Initia Orchestration Layer / Layer 1—The base blockchain orchestration layer coordinates network security, liquidity, consensus, governance, interoperability, and inter-chain messaging.

  • Initia Rollups / Layer 2s / Minitia / Mini Initias — These are scalability solutions anchored on the Initia Base Chain to improve transaction throughput. They operate any of the three VM options supported by the CosmosSDK that runs underneath to provide flexibility.

  • Initia Optimistic Rollup Framework / OPinit Stack — Refers to Initia’s OR framework. It is built on the CosmosSDK and provides the rollbacks and fraud proofs used to secure the network of rollups on Initia.

  • Interoperability Protocol / Bridging Middleware—These are the Inter-Blockchain Communication protocol and TBA Bridge Provider. They facilitate the seamless transfer of value and data between Initia's base chain and L2s and across different blockchain networks.

The platform’s activities occur in the two layers, as highlighted below.

Initia (Layer 1)

This layer relies on CosmosSDK’s CometBFT and MoveVM for consensus and smart contract functionality, respectively. These two features make this layer a permissionless smart contracting platform, making it the ecosystem’s infrastructure and data management anchor.

The key features of this layer are:

  • Omnitia Liquidity Hub — It leverages a native decentralized exchange (DEX) that facilitates weighted and stableswap pools. This DEX module allows the layer to support the native token and its pairing with other whitelisted tokens. The liquidity hub enables Initia Network to establish a sustainable liquidity foundation that enhances user experiences. Besides, it supports yield generation through staking, eases efficient token flow for efficient transactions, and creates a pathway for flexible conversion of assets into gas for L2  operations.

  • Omnitia Shared Security (OSS) — This scalable security infrastructure secures assets across all possible Minitias. The L1 validator set adjudicates suspected fraud reported on an L2. It has a Shared Data Availability Layer that facilitates access to state data that validator sets use to construct fraud proofs. It also has tools that enable relevant actors to download and verify transaction data. Lastly, it allows Minitias to post transaction data to Celestia.

Minitia (Layer 2)

Minitias rely on the orchestration layer for security and data settlement, meaning they operate without native consensus mechanisms. This architecture allows them to integrate advanced rollup functionalities.

Initia Network Minitia architecture

Transactions on the layer are sequenced and settled to the L1 and Celestia in bulk, which leaves it with adequate room for secure and transparent operation and verification.

Why is Initia useful?

Initia blockchain OPinit Stack

The platform eliminates the challenges that developers experience when building app chains. The platform presents a technology stack that allows developers to fetch the features they want to incorporate into their chains without necessarily attaining proficiency in the underlying technologies supporting the processes.

This product stack's compact architecture gives users a singular chain experience, a feature that is especially critical for developers seeking flexible scalability. Initia allows users to interact with numerous interwoven rollups, reducing entry barriers.

What makes Initia unique?

Initia addresses the challenges of modular systems and integrates processes such as exchange support, fiat gateways, and data management natively from L1. This approach substantially reduces overhead for developers.

Minitias offers a comprehensive range of built-in features, including token fungibility across different VMs, instant bridging, and access to native USDC and Cross-Chain Transfer Protocol (CCTP) for improved liquidity. They also offer fiat gateways, Oracle interfaces, elaborate developer tools, and front-end widgets for better user experience.

INIT Token

INIT is the native token of the Initia Network, playing a crucial role in network transactions, staking, and governance. It serves as the primary currency for paying gas fees and facilitating cross-chain transactions across Initia's Layer 1 and Layer 2 solutions.

Through Initia staking, users can delegate their INIT tokens to validators, securing the network and earning rewards. Initia also introduces Enshrined Liquidity, which allows users to stake not only solo INIT tokens but also liquidity pool (LP) tokens, increasing liquidity while generating rewards from swaps and yield

INIT also grants governance rights, allowing token holders to vote on key proposals and influence the future direction of the network. This makes it central to both the economic and security aspects of Initia.

Initia Blockchain in summary

Initia is a Layer 1 blockchain network built using CosmosSDK, designed to provide scalability and interoperability solutions. The network anchors a network of Layer 2 solutions built into an interwoven constellation of rollups. The L2s leverage the CosmosSDK, the platform’s three VM technology options, and an interoperability layer to facilitate value and data transfer between the base chain and the rollups and for interchain communication. The platform’s ecosystem eliminates the challenges of building and deploying app chains.
